Everyone's That Girl
The ‘That Girl’ Trend
The 'that girl' viral trend has taken social media by storm, with the premise of inspiring and motivating others. From TikTok videos to Instagram posts, everyone seems to want to be 'that girl.’ But who is ‘that girl’?
'That girl' is often portrayed as someone who is confident, stylish, and effortlessly cool. She seems to have it all together and is always on top of her game. You've probably seen it all over your feed - lifestyle content accompanied by empowering captions like “become that girl” or “that girl knows her worth”. And the trend has really blown up, with tons of social media users jumping on the bandwagon with hashtags like #thatgirl and #thatgirltrend.
But here's the thing - as much as I love the concept of 'that girl', I couldn’t find a version of her that I could really relate to or see myself in. And it turns out, I’m not alone in that. A quick Google search revealed that many other people feel the same way.
Unrealistic Expectations?
We found that the trend often presents an idealised and highly curated version of oneself that may not be representative of reality. Many of the images and messages associated with the trend feature people who appear to be confident, successful and happy which can create an unrealistic standard for others to compare themselves to.
Additionally, the trend may perpetuate the idea that one’s self-worth is tied to their social status, adding pressure to look a certain way or conform to certain images or standards. This can especially be damaging for those who may not fit the narrow definition of “that girl”. It’s important to remember that social media is often a highlight, and that what is portrayed online may not always reflect reality.
It’s clear that the trend can be both realistic and unrealistic, depending on how it’s interpreted by individuals. On one hand, promoting self-confidence, self-love and positivity is always a good thing and can be a helpful way for individuals to boost their mental and emotional well-being. After all, feeling empowered and believing in oneself is an important part of personal growth and development!
However, for the benefits of the trend to be reaped, it’s essential we steer it towards diversion, inclusivity and empowerment for everyone - regardless of age, gender, appearance, background or social status.
Everyone's That Girl
We believe that everyone is beautifully unique, everyone has their own goals, everyone has their individual struggles and therefore, everyone’s definition of being ‘that girl’ is their own. Instead of another unrealistic standard for women to live up to, we believe that Everyone’s That Girl.
Sure, there are days when I manage to embody the hype of being ‘that girl’ - waking up super early, making myself an aesthetic smoothie, working out in a matching fit and hair tied up slick. But other days are simply not like that at all - and you know what? That is perfectly ok.
As long as I wake up with the intention of how I want to spend my day, I am still working towards my personal definition of what it means to be that girl. It’s not that the trend had bad principles, it’s the prescriptiveness with which they are delivered that is the problem.
Being ‘that girl’ should ultimately be about becoming the best version of yourself. It’s about how you feel, not how your life looks in comparison to others on social media. We believe that everyone can be their own version of ‘that girl’ - and it’s up to you to define what that means to you!
Everybody has off days, not everything can be super aesthetic and things don’t always go to plan. Setting goals and maintaining habits are just as important as spontaneous plans and allowing yourself to have bad days. You are the author of your own 'that girl' story.
